RMatlonRonald J. Matlon is the retired CEO and Senior Litigation Consultant for Matlon & Associates, Litigation Consultants, 2324 Carroll Mill Road, Phoenix, MD.  Also, from 1984-2015, he served as the Executive Director of the American Society of Trial Consultants.  Matlon is one of the founders and first president of ASTC.  Upon retirement, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society.

Dr. Matlon received his Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and then Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Communication Studies from Purdue University.  He taught at the University of Illinois-Chicago, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Arizona.  For fifteen years, he was a professor and chairperson of the Department of Communication at Towson University in Maryland.  His areas of expertise are legal argument, persuasion, public speaking, and courtroom communication.  He is now Professor Emeritus.

As a consultant, he worked on hundreds on civil, criminal and commercial cases in jury selection, witness preparation, mock trial/focus group studies and case strategy and analysis. He has authored six books including Opening Statements/Closing Arguments, Communications in the Legal Process and Communication Strategies in the Practice of Lawyering. Professor Matlon has written several articles on courtroom communication, and has appeared before bar associations and legal organizations offering seminars and workshops on litigation persuasion.

Dr. Matlon is one of the founders of the Towson University Retired Faculty Association (TURFA) and serves as its current President.
